Marie Kondo-Inspired Mom Accidentally Donated Her Son’s Favourite Mug to Goodwill – with $6,500 in Cash Inside

It’s only January, but Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is already the feel-good TV show of 2019.

A clear out for your soul as well as your home, the lifestyle guru’s ethos focuses on “sparking joy” and promoting a positive and happy mindset via decluttering your home.

Still, one mom is regretting following the “KonMari” method, after she accidentally handed over her son’s $6,500 in cash to Goodwill.

When Lindsay Preiss, from Atlanta, donated her son Devon’s old Disney souvenior mug to charity, she thought she was just helping to organise the household.

What she didn’t know was that Devon had sold his car that day. As he was in the middle of moving apartments, the 27-year-old thought the Mickey Mouse mug was a good choice to keep his money safe while he sorted everything out.

But as the mug was covered by a lid, his mom didn’t realise there was anything inside it during her big tidy up, and assumed he wouldn’t miss it.

“[I feel] like the worst mom in the world,” she told WSB-TV. “I mean, I feel terrible.”

While Devon added: “At first I thought it was a joke or a prank or something like that.

“She thought I was upset about the mug being gone, which, I miss the mug as well, but what was inside was a little more important.”

The pair contacted Goodwill, where store managers scoured hours of security footage. They witnessed an employee label the item with a price tag, before placing it in a bin ready to be shelved in store. They believe the mug has since been purchased.

Lindsay and Devon are now offering a cash reward to whoever bought the mug and is kind enough to return the money.

“We would be very, very thankful if you brought it back,” Lindsay said.

“I’m just asking someone to please have it in your heart to do the right thing and give it back.”

Still, thousands of dollars in cash isn’t the worst thing to be accidentally donated to Goodwill. In 2014, a family mistakenly donated cremated human remains to a branch in Indiana. While the Goodwill in Fort Worth, Texas, has more than their fair share of prosthetic legs gifted to them (amongst other worrying items).
