Michael Avenatti, lawyer to porn star Stormy Daniels in her suit against President Donald Trump, has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
His estranged wife was reportedly left “swollen and bruised” after an incident on Tuesday, US media report.
Mr Avenatti has not yet been booked but is in custody, Los Angeles police said.
Entertainment news group TMZ first reported the arrest on Wednesday.
The lawyer rose to prominence representing Ms Daniels.
The actor and director alleges she and President Trump had a brief relationship – a claim he denies – and has sought to free herself from a non-disclosure agreement she signed before the 2016 election.
According to the report on TMZ, Mr Avenatti’s ex-wife left a Century City apartment in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
She was left “swollen and bruised” after the encounter, TMZ report, with “red marks” on her cheeks.
On Wednesday, she went back to the apartment building. Mr Avenatti also arrived, and was reportedly held in the lobby by security. Police arrived and took the lawyer into custody.
The pair married in 2011, but Mr Avenatti reportedly filed for divorce in 2017.
His office has yet to comment on the reports.
